Autism

Autism is a lifelong, developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with and relates to other people, and how they experience the world around them.

 

Children with autism have trouble communicating. They have trouble understanding what other people think and feel. 

 

This makes it very hard for them to express themselves either with words or through gestures, facial expressions, and touch.

 

There are many organisations who can help and support you and your child.

The National Autism Society explains what is Autism, the different names associated with Autism and related conditions.  How to talk about the condition and how to support your family member. 

 

Autism and everyday life

The NHS provide information and advice about living as an autistic person or caring for an autistic child. You can find information on how to help your child with everyday life, how to help with your childs behaviour, help for families for autistic people, advice about school and much more. 

Autism - understanding your childs' needs

Derby City Council provide information about autism, how to get an assessment, downloads and what support is available in Derby to support your child of young adult.

The Department of Education provides a website which has a wide range of supporting tools and resources.  It has excellent links on how to find a school for your child, working with your child's school.

Derbyshire Autism Services

Derbyshire Autism Services is a small charity working across Derbyshire.  They offer information, advice and guidance and support to children, young people and adults affected by autism - with or without a diagnosis.
